The summer of 2024 was marked by an upsurge in drownings in France, due in particular to heat waves. The report published by Santé publique France highlights the worrying figures and reminds us of the importance of preventive measures to avoid these tragedies.
Every summer, swimming is one of the most popular activities in France. Unfortunately, these moments of relaxation can sometimes turn tragic. The drowning surveillance bulletin published by Santé publique France for the period June 1 to August 21, 2024 reveals some worrying statistics. The report highlights a significant rise in drowning cases during the summer of 2024, particularly in connection with heatwave episodes, and reminds us of the importance of preventive measures at all ages.
Between July 16 and August 15, 2024, France experienced periods of high heat, encouraging crowds to flock to beaches, swimming pools and watering holes. The report indicates that during this period, 576 drownings were recorded, an increase of 41% on 2023. Of these incidents, 146 were fatal, compared with 109 over the same period the previous year.
The report's data show that children under the age of 6 are particularly at risk, accounting for 32% of all drownings, although only 6% of these were fatal. For adults, on the other hand, the situation is more critical, with 52% of drownings involving this age group, and 46% of drownings resulting in death. These figures underline the need for increased vigilance, especially for adults, who appear to be more susceptible to fatal drowning.
Drowning doesn't just happen at sea. In 2024, rivers and lakes accounted for almost half of all drowning deaths, among both children and adults. For minors, private swimming pools are also a major hazard, while adults drown mainly at sea (38% of fatal drownings among adults occurred at sea).
The report shows an overall stability in the total number of drownings between 2023 and 2024, with almost 1,000 drownings recorded over the two-year observation period. However, significant variations are observed depending on the period and weather conditions. For example, during the first fortnight of August 2024, there was a 58% increase in the number of drowning deaths compared with the previous year.
