What is Chlorine and its risks?
Chlorine is a product used in swimming pools to treat water. It is an aggressive product for the skin, which can promote irritations in our children. The risk of suffering from irritations depends on the frequency of exposure. Indeed, a child who swims will be more exposed than a child who goes to the pool twice a year. We had discussed the benefits of swimmingand the solution is not to avoid swimming pools! So, how do you recognize chlorine-related skin irritation? How can we relieve irritated skin in children? And how can we prevent irritation? In this article we will give you tips on how you and your child can enjoy the benefits of the pool in complete freedom and safety!
How to recognize skin irritations?
A child's skin is always more fragile than that of adults. After swimming in the pool, you may notice that the child's skin is dry and itchy. Red patches or burning sensations may appear. Irritation may occur all over the body or in a few more sensitive areas. Such as the folds of the elbows, knees, hands and also on the face. It is important to know that the symptoms can also appear spontaneously, even after several swimming sessions. So not necessarily from the first swim.
Tips to relieve your child's irritated skin:
1. Rinse the child's skin with a PH neutral soap (atopic skin) toremove any traces of chlorine that may be present. 2. Spray a little thermal water on your child's body. This reduces itching and allows the epidermis to regenerate. 3. Dry the skin well 4. Apply amoisturizing cream or milk (for atopic skin) all over the body, but especially on the most sensitive areas (elbows, knees, hands and face).
Normally the signs of irritation should disappear. If this is not the case, it is advisable to consult a specialized doctor.
Tip to prevent skin irritation after swimming:
1. Make sure your child showers with clear water before and after every swim in the pool. 2. Watch your child's skin for signs of irritation (even before entering the pool). This may help you to determine whether chlorine is the cause of any irritation. 3. After every shower, always dry your child's skin thoroughly before "creaming" 4. To moisturize, choose a cream for atopic skin (prefer soaps for atopic skin, as they need to be gentle at their age). 5. Encourage the use of swimming goggles and a silicone bathing cap when swimming in the pool. Your scalp needs to be protected from chlorine too. 6. Little extra: Don't forget to rinse your floating swimsuit PLOUF for girls and boy and accessories your child has used in the pool. Chlorine can also damage them.
